Osprey manta 34 hydration pack8/7/2023 There's still the 36 if you think the 28 won't be room enough, though I can assure you this is plenty of room for day hiking. Overall I'm extremely pleased with my choice. And I do love the magnet keeping the bite valve from dangling (I don't like loose things bouncing around). But they do have pockets on each which is great for that protein bar, keeping my phone, headphones, etc. The hip belts are not padded - just a mesh webbing. But with only two sizes to choose from, with some strap adjusting it feels very comfortable. +, the hip belts ride just a smidge high on even the large size. I'm 6'1" at the start of the day, about 5'10" after a long day at the office. This is my first hydration pack so still getting used to the bite valve and can't compare to other systems. Cinch straps snug the pack down against my body. Which works out well because I hike with my boys and parents always tend to become pack mules for their kids ("can you take this?"). I rolled up 3 t-shirts and stuffed them in there as well and they fit. I can fit my rain shell, DSLR with 24-105 lens (when wanted), a point 'n shoot tough camera, first aid kit, space blanket, food, mini tripod inside the pack and still have room to spare. with this, there is still plenty of space in the pack for an extended day peaking in the ADKs. I think it actually changes the linear shape of the compartment, and the bag is still the 23-24 liters after the bladdder is full. The curve of the handle eats into the space. I now see what folks were talking about with the bladder handle stealing some room in the main compartment. After reading the reviews, I decided I liked the idea of the magnetic bite valve holder on the Osprey as well as the trekking pole loop configuration. I'd sometimes drag along my DSLR, but because it's not necessarily a pack that's conducive to lashing a tripod anyway, the larger camera may not always come with we. But I have another pack specifically for photo excursions, so it really came to down to the priority of the day. There's a gap in the photo backpack market, and you are forced to choose between a technical pack or a photo backpack. My concern was would I have enough room, particularly for my DSLR (Canon 5D II). NEVER again! Came down to the Camelbak Fourteener and Osprey 28. I specifically wanted a hydration pack due to a water misjudgement on a warm fall hike last year.
